Tending an Altar

A living representation of our relationality with nature, ancestors and the unseen world.

Altars are found in spiritual and religious practices of devotion all around the world.

Altars become a tangible and living representation of our current state of relationality with nature, ancestors and the unseen world.

As humans we naturally tend to create them with photos of family, special tokens from a walk or basically anything we find to be pretty. Even our gardens, kitchens or our bodies can be an altar. Altars are everywhere.

The only difference is the intentionality we bring when organizing and engaging with these spaces and arrangements. It can become an act of remembrance, connection or even a spiritual practice or it can just be pretty.

Herbal medicines, plants, flowers, song, and nature as a whole feature prominently in my personal practice of ancestral reverence and tending an altar.

This video was shot and layered with audio and soundscapes that made it a really fun project to create as it peaks into a bit of the vibrancy that can come through this type of work.

This video was created as a complementary resource to contribute to a collaborative project in the works with my dear friend and proprietress of Lotus Lantern Healing Arts, Liliana (more to come on that in time).

Enjoy.
